Nell'area dell'ampia, sebbene mai esplorata sistematicamente, necropoli tarantina, si è in più casi avuto occasione di individuare e mettere in luce sepolture sicuramente appartenenti ad atleti, alcuni dei quali senza dubbio di alto e talora di eccezionale livello. Il tipo delle tombe, infatti e i corredi depositati accanto ai defunti dimostrano che alcuni di questi erano stati premiati in gare prestigiose, come ad esempio quelle "Panatenaiche" (1)  per diverse specialità e, talvolta, in più di una edizione ciascuno. Ciò conferma il dato delle fonti letterarie, che elencano numerosi nomi di atleti tarantini vincitori di agoni importanti e assunti pertanto a fama talvolta quasi leggendaria.

E' il caso ad esempio del medico e dietologo, sportivo, oltre che allenatore ed atleta IKKOS, del pugile MYS e di altri ancora. Dalla posizione e dal raggruppamento delle sepolture, inoltre, si deduce che gli atleti venivano sepolti in edifici funerari comuni, segno che essi appartenevano a consorterie o associazioni sportive inizialmente di ceto aristocratico e solo più tardi aperte anche a classi medi e, forse, anche al popolo. Sembra, infatti, accertato che la attività sportiva, impegnativa e costosa, sopratutto per certe specialità (sport equesti, ad esempio), fosse originariamente esclusivo privilegio della classe aristocratica anche perchè essa era considerata preparatoria e funzionale all'esercizio delle armi, che era, appunto, prerogativa di detta classe.

Solo a partire dal VI° secolo a.C. il processo di democratizzazione della polis ed il progressivo diffondersi del professionismo nello sport estende l'esercizio atletico anche nelle classi inferiori. A Taranto, ad esempio, ciò è dimostrato, fra l'altro dalla tipologia stessa delle tombe, spesso modeste, anche se appartenenti a vincitori di gare di notevole rilievo. Dalle fonti scritte, inoltre, apprendiamo interessanti notizie su alcuni degli atleti più noti e prestigiosi. Nell'ambito della Magna Grecia, essi appartenevano a quasi tutte le città più importanti, ma quelle che si distinsero per numero e per fama dei loro campioni sportivi, furono, in un primo tempo Crotone e successivamente, Taranto.

A Crotone, ad esmpio, in una Olimpiade (2) piazzò tutti i suoi concorrenti ai primi sette posti, della corsa dello "Stadio", il più noto degli atleti fu senza dubbio Milone, vissuto nella seconda metà del VI° secolo a.C., la cui leggendaria vita e la stessa morte singolare interessarono diffusamente la tradizione letteraria antica. A Taranto, invece, verso la metà del V° secolo a.C. fiorì IKKOS, il quale, oltre che atleta (vince, infatti, nel Pentathlon (3) nella 84° Olimpiade (440 a.C.) fu un medico, un dietologo e un maestro sportivo nel senso più alto e più completo. Suo, infatti, sembra l'insegnamento che sosteneva la necessità per gli atleti per una regolare dieta carnea (contro una precedente consuetudine di cibarsi solo di formaggio e di fichi secchi) di una ordinata norma di vita fondata sulla temperanza e sulla castità durante gli allenamenti.

Non è escluso che sia proprio di IKKOS una delle tombe di atleti rinvenuta nella necropoli tarantina.

- SMIKRINAS o MIKRINAS, vincitore dello Stadio nell'Olimpiade 107 (anno 352 a.C.).

- MYS, vincitore nell'Olimpiade 111 (anno 336 a.C.) nel Pugilato.

- ANOCHOS or ANOCHAS, son of DAMATAS of Taranto. It won in the Stage and the DIAULO (run double) and had one statue in Greece.

- IIKKOS, winner of the Pentathlon in Olimpiade 66 (year 476 a.C.).

- KRATIDAS, winner in the fight of the children, Olimpiade 77 (year 472 a.C.).

- IKKOS, winner of the Pentathlon in Olimpiade 83 (year 448 a.C.); Olimpiade 84 (year 444 a.C.). Statue in Olimpia had one.

- DIONISODOROS, winner in the Stage in Olimpiade 100 (year 380 to C.).

- TION, winner in the Pentathlon in Olimpiade 78 (year 468 a.C.).

- SMIKRINAS or MIKRINAS, winner of the Stage in Olimpiade 107 (year 352 a.C.).

- MYS, winner in Olimpiade 111 (year 336 a.C.) in the Boxing.

I vincitori di gare ad Olimpia, Delfi, Istmo, Atene, non ottenevano solo corone simboliche di olivastro, di lauro, di pino, di prezzemolo e sedano. Gli atleti erano infatti spinti a gareggiare non soltanto dalla gloria ma anche dai consistenti premi in denaro, ETLA, ottenuti al ritorno in patria.

Nelle grandi Panatenee, oltre che con il denaro, il vincitore veniva compensato con anfore contenenti olio pregiato che proveniva dai sacri oliveti dell'Attica e destinato ai vincitori. A ciò si aggiunge il dono simbolico di un'anfora variopinta, con la raffigurazione di ATHENA PROMACHOS (che combatte in prima fila) su un lato e sull'altro la rappresentazione, a testimonianza della vittoria riportata, della gara per cui l'anfora Panatenaica era assegnata.
